How a Tesla or other EV should be towed
Electric cars do not tow like a typical front-wheel-drive sedan. On a Tesla, and on many other EVs, the motor is connected to the wheels. Roll those wheels on the pavement and you can turn the motor, even if the cabin looks switched off. The result can be a damaged drive unit. The haul that avoids that is a flatbed, with all four tires on the deck.
Say it on the call
When you call (714) 785-6449, say that the vehicle is a Tesla or another EV before a truck is dispatched. Say the model if you know it, and say whether the screen still lights up. A car that can creep onto a bed is a different load from a car that is dark and will not roll. This is the same request on Pacific Coast Highway, in a pier garage, or on the 405 shoulder.
If the screen still works
Tesla’s own towing instructions tell the owner to enable the car’s towing setting from the screen before it is moved, when the car still has power. That setting releases the hold that keeps the car parked. If you cannot find it, say so. Do not let anyone drag the car with two wheels down while you look.
A short move is not a tow
Nudging a car a few feet out of a travel lane is not the same job as taking it across town. For the actual trip, to a service center, a shop, or home, keep all four wheels up. The service page is Tesla and EV towing. The equipment difference is on flatbed towing.
